LA PUENTE — After giving up more than 500 rushing yards in last week’s shootout loss to Alemany, the comforts of home were just what the doctor ordered for Bishop Amat with another key Mission League contest against Chaminade on Friday.

Bishop Amat fell behind early, but came back to post a 29-18 victory to guarantee at least a top-three league finish and automatic playoff berth to next month’s CIF Southern Section football playoffs with one game to go at Serra next week that would clinch no worse than second with a victory.

Bishop Amat improved to 6-3 and 3-1 while Chaminade dropped to 5-2 and 2-2.

“This was for the playoffs and we’re in a good situation after tonight,” said Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said.

Bishop Amat will likely be in Division 2 or 3, something it is not accustomed to after competing only in the Division 1 playoffs for at least the last three decades.

“Wherever it lands we’re good with, we’ve never had an issue (with divisions),” Hagerty said. “We’re always just following the rules and we’re happy to be in postseason play. It doesn’t matter where for us.”

Bishop Amat senior quarterback Tobin O’Dell and receiver Delano Franklin were hooking up often. O’Dell finished with 208 yards and three touchdowns, and Franklin hauled in five receptions for 102 yards and a TD.

“We really connected today,” Franklin said. “Watching film, we really had to exploit how they played. With no safety over the top, we had to do what we did and that’s what you saw on the field.

“Our goal coming into this week was knowing we had to win and really sealing it to get in the playoffs, so we’re going to do what we have to do from here.”

Aiden Ramos also had a solid night, rushing for 111 yards and scoring two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.

Chaminade scored first after Amat failed to capitalize inside the 10 on its opening drive.

After O’Dell threw an interception at the 1, which the Eagles returned to the 8, it set up a 92-yard drive for the Eagles that culminated with quarterback Jake Macias scoring on a 6-yard run. Paul Holyfield Jr., added the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 2:31 to go in the opening quarter.

Macias completed 13 of 19 for 132 passes to lead the Eagles on a night when they did not get much from their run game.

O’Dell quickly made up for his INT by throwing a slant over the middle for Franklin, who did the rest, going 55-yards for the score, and Ramos ran in the conversion to tie the score, 8-8.

Ryan Sayeri showed off his leg for Chaminade by easily converting a 36-yard field goal to push the Eagles back ahead, 11-8, early in the second quarter, but the Lancers thoroughly dominated defensively after that, with strong safety Richard Munoz seemingly everywhere on defense.

“Last week we didn’t execute well in the running game and we knew they (Chaminade) were going to come out hard and we stopped them,” Ramos said. “We knew we had to win tonight to get in the playoffs and stay over .500.”

Bishop Amat finally grabbed the lead after O’Dell threw a ball in the corner that Brady Kalau wrestled away from a defender for a 25-yard touchdown and 15-11 lead.

Bishop Amat extended its lead on the opening drive of the third quarter with Ramos scoring on a 9-yard touchdown run for a 22-11 lead and Ramos added another TD on a 12-yard TD reception that made it 28-11.

Chaminade answered, but it was too little too late. But it was nice. Indiana Wijay tossed a pass over the middle to Paul Holyfield Jr., for an 87-yard connection with 4:32 left that cut Amat’s lead to 11 points.
